WHY UNICORN HAIR?

Honestly, if i could talk everyone into putting fun colors in their hair it would be my dream. I am all about self expression! Whether its a full head of rainbow colors or just a simple peek-a-boo; it gives each person individuality. Even though it is extremely popular, there are so many different looks that will give your hair its own unique style. With that said, there are SO many things you have to know before you do fashion colors and i’m here to guide you through it!

PICTURES!!

Always look at pictures, even if you just want something as simple as “purple”. Now a days – there is a huge variety and a thousand pictures of every single shade of purple. You could walk into the salon and just state that you want streaks of purple, but with no picture, you could end up with a deep violet rather than the lilac that you had in mind. Your vision of a color could mean something completely different to someone else. I always recommend saving AT LEAST 3 pictures of the color you want so that you and your stylist are on the same page.

You also have to be careful with the pictures you find. About half of the pictures you search online are unfortunately photoshopped. That’s why you need to look at more than just one so you can achieve a more realistic result.

THE (LONG) PROCESS

ALWAYS set up a consultation before you make your appointment. Your stylist has to know what condition your hair is in, the exact colors you want, how long it will take to achieve those colors (if achievable), hair history, and price.

We know how exciting it is to have Mermaid hair, and TRUST ME I want you to have it. But, it’s definitely not something you want to rush. Clear your schedule for the day! Because most likely you will be in the salon for 3-6 hours. If you have anything other than platinum blonde hair, you have to lighten everything first. Meaning you HAVE to get your hair to blonde before doing ANY fashion color. It could possibly take multiple processes or multiple appointments. Patience is KEY. As much as I want you to have pretty pastel blue and pink hair, it takes tons of time. Plus, we want your hair in the best condition as possible so your color looks the absolute best and your hair stays healthy.

Which brings me to talk about the cost. These colors aren’t cheap. If you’re going from dark brown to light pink, expect to spend around $200-$300. Doing this type of service uses a lot of product and (again) takes a lot of time. However, once you get to a nice blonde you could really have any color you want. That’s the best part about fashion colors, you can usually change them pretty easily.

MAINTENANCE

You’re spending a pretty penny on getting your mermaid locks. Don’t go cheap on your products. Nothing strips fashion colors more than cheap shampoos and conditioners. Our Aveda Color Conserve shampoo and conditioner will help lock in your color and will also leave your hair shiny and EXTRA soft. DO NOT FORGET A HEAT PROTECTANT!! I repeat, if you don’t use a heat protectant, your unicorn hair will turn basic pony faster than you think. We have plenty of heat protecting products that will prevent that from happening, Aveda’s Daily Hair Repair is my personal go to – it adds protein and moisture to the hair while protecting you from temps up to 450.

Lastly, embrace the fade. Once your color does start to fade, don’t get upset because you most likely have color that NO ONE ELSE HAS and that no one else can recreate. Faded fashion colors can turn into amazing pastels, which is hard to achieve in the first place.
