Balayage… What is it and why do you want it?

One of the most popular trends in hair color today, Balayage, is a versatile technique used to achieve many different looks. Balayage can be used to create anything from an ombre, to a soft and gradual color melt, or even a dramatic look with bold blonde tips .  The word ‘balayage’ actually means ‘to paint’ or ‘to sweep’ in French, which speaks to the technique of applying color (essentially painting color onto the hair), as opposed to the traditional highlighting method which uses foils.  This gives your stylist more flexibility and creative control with your color.

A few examples of the variation of balayage.

Balayage is a French hair coloring technique from the 1970’s which has seen a spike in popularity and usage in the past year in particular. This rise to fame is at least partially attributed to the fact that it works on almost every hair type and color!

With the hand painting of balayage, your stylist can create a more natural and sun-kissed look than is achievable with traditional highlighting.  Balayage can also lend more flexibility to heavier transitions like ombres by allowing your stylist to distribute the color in a variety of different patterns and concentrations.

Balayage is also completely customizable, which means your hair can transition to a variety of different colors.  Balayage can be natural looking, from a dark brown root to caramel ends, or it can fade from a medium brown to a striking and beautiful platinum!  It is perfect for blondes who want to keep a darker root (and therefore have less maintenance) or for anyone looking to add a sun-kissed glow to their locks.  One of the greatest benefits of balayage is that it grows out beautifully.  A simple root touch up or toner will keep this look fresh without breaking the bank on a full set of highlights every few weeks!
